James Harland Been, Jr was born November 3, 1919 at Fort Smith, Sebastian Co., Ar. to James Harlen, Sr.& Lillie Beatrice Parker Been. James married Veronica Annella Yodzukinas in the Phillippines. from Veronica's obit.... "Veronica had attended nursing school in Missouri. She then joined the Army and served in the Philippines where she met and married James Been. Both left the service with the rank of 2nd Lt. After the service they resided in Berkeley, California while Jim finished college, becoming a teacher and she worked as a nurse." No date has been found for the marriage.

James enlisted in the US Army January 28, 1943 and was discharged March 10, 1946 with the rank of 2nd Lt. Nothing more is known about his time in the service.

James Harland Been passed away November 3, 1919 at 23 Jan 1984 t Colusa, Colusa County, California. His burial was at the Catholic Holy Cross Cemetery. Colusa, Colusa County, California

JAMES H. BEEN, 64, b. Fort Smith, Arkansas, Nov. 2, 1919, d. Colusa, Jan. 23, 1984. Mr. Been served during World War II in Manila, Philippines where he met and married his wife Veronica. Upon his discharge from the U.S. Army, he attended the University of California, Berkeley where he received a masters [sic] degree in Fine Arts, a Secondary Teaching Credential and minors in English and history.

Coming to Colusa with his family he taught for a time in Princeton before going to the Colusa Unified School District where he taught from 1958 to 1968. He was vice principal at Colusa High School from 1968-1972 and was Principal from 1972 until his retirement in 1980.

Mr. Been was a member of the California Teachers Association and was involved in the Catholic Church as a Lay Reader. In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter Andrea Hanna of Chico; two sons, Daniel Been of Desert Hot Springs and Andrew Been of Hayward; two brothers, Roger of Alabama and Bill of Mississippi; three sisters, Meta Leger, Tommie Ferguson and Mary Copeland, all of Arkansas; and five grandchildren.

Arrangements were under the direction of McNary-Moore Chapel with interment in the Colusa Cemetery.
